Genna is an economist with Acacia Economics, specialising in competition and regulatory economics.

Genna has worked extensively in economic analysis for competition and regulatory matters across a range of sectors including healthcare, telecommunications, retail, media, financial services, ticketing, agriculture, biotechnology, minerals and mining, aviation and chemicals. She spent four years as an economist at the Competition Commission of South Africa and has also consulted widely to regulators, government and private companies in South Africa and the region. Prior to her current position, she was the Manager of Competition Economics at DNA Economics, where she acted as the expert economist to the Minister of Economic Development and the Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services in the Vodacom Neotel merger.

Genna has substantial experience in research and capacity building in topics relating to competition, regulation and industrial policy and is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development at the University of Johannesburg.  She has presented and published a number of papers on topics related to competition and regulatory economics. She has also been involved in coordinating and facilitating training on competition economics for practitioners and in teaching a competition economics course for Masters students.

Genna holds a BA in Economics and Management from Oxford University and an MSc in Economics (with distinction) from the University of Warwick.

Competition Commission Healthcare Market Inquiry:  Currently providing expert economic analysis and advice for the Competition Commission of South Africa.

Hollard/Regent:  Providing expert economic analysis to the Competition Commission for the Hollard/Regent merger.
ICASA: advice in relation to the distribution of spectrum.

Vodacom/Neotel:  Economic expert to the Minister of Economic Development and the Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services in the Vodacom Neotel merger.

Research on barriers to entry:  Research for CCRED on the barriers to entry in the liquid fuels, mobile money and telecommunications sector in South Africa.

Mobile money complaint:  Economic analysis on mobile money complaint for the Competition and Tariff Commission of Zimbabwe.

Liquid fuel storage application:  Economic input to a National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) hearing into the licensing application for a new fuel storage facility in the Western Cape of South Africa. 

Mediclinic/Flashing star:  Horizontal merger concerning the market for day hospital services in Limpopo province. 

IDC/Rio Tinto merger:  Horizontal merger concerning the markets for magnetite iron ore and sulphuric acid. 

Media24/Natal Witness merger:  Vertical merger concerning the markets for coldset printing and community newspaper publishing in KZN and the northern Eastern Cape.

Pioneer/Pannar merger:  Horizontal 3 to 2 merger in the market for hybrid maize seed breeding. Assisted with market definition, competition analysis and evaluation of efficiencies during the Commission’s investigation.

Supermarkets exclusive leases:  Part of the Commission team investigating exclusive lease arrangements between supermarkets and shopping centres. 

Ticketing exclusive dealing:  Assisted with preparation of Commission expert report. (Case still to be heard by the Tribunal)

Media predatory pricing:  Part of the Commission team investigating alleged predatory pricing conduct in a community newspaper market.
