Energy

Acacia Economics has a growing interest in energy markets, and electricity markets in particular. Our economists have engaged in analysis and assessment of electricity, natural gas and liquid fuel markets in South Africa.

We have acted as expert economists in contested proceedings. For instance, we have provided expert evidence on behalf of the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) before the High Court in South Africa on various disputes. This includes disputes regarding electricity tariffs set for Eskom, municipal electricity tariffs, the pricing of gas pipelines, methodology used to price gas and pricing of liquid fuel infrastructure. We have also worked for various private sector companies in the energy sector. In the competition space, our economists have worked on key mergers in the sector as well as compliance projects.

We have also provided economic analysis and assessments in these sectors. This includes developing tariff and pricing methodologies and calculation (including DEA, SFA), financial modelling, policy development and analysis and impact assessments. We are also engaged in research in the energy sector with a specific focus on regulation in the context of green energy and transitions.
